Ditmas Park Victorian

Charmed by the beautiful neighborhood and wrap-around porch, my long time NYC clients fell in love with this 1905 Victorian. Situated in historic Ditmas Park Brooklyn, this community is a tree-filled oasis consisting of large freestanding Victorians, each with a unique character.

Dark somber colors defined the interior when the clients purchased this home, but having moved from a loft in the West Village filled with modern furniture, they were eager to create a bright and airy traditional home for their three sons that respected the historical provenance of the home and neighborhood.

We started the renovation by adding a stately bay window overlooking the garden. We opened the living room to the main entry and re-located the dining room to a central position. A sunny palate was selected to enhance the light that filtered through the numerous windows while drawing attention to the arch and woodwork details that define this property.

As a gracious host and talented chef, it was critical to my client that she procure a huge round table to feed her numerous guests. Furniture was selected to be inviting, comfortable, and sensual, encouraging conversation long into the night. Lush textiles, carpets, and antique wood pieces inlaid with shell and bone added layers of texture and interest to this elegant home. In seeking a style very different from their West Village loft, we spent months scouring antique stores and flea markets looking for unique pieces that reflected their love of travel, diverse tastes, and sense of community.

The culminating effect is an honest reflection of the homeowners’ character and lifestyle, within an environment where they celebrate life.
